The Bible (from Koine Greek τὰ βιβλία, tà biblía, "the books")[1] is a collection of sacred texts or scriptures that Jews and Christians consider to be a product of divine inspiration and a record of the relationship between God and humans. Many different authors contributed to the Bible. What is regarded as canonical text differs depending on traditions and groups; a number of Bible canons have evolved, with overlapping and diverging contents. The Christian Old Testament overlaps with the Hebrew Bible and the Greek Septuagint; the Hebrew Bible is known in Judaism as the Tanakh. The New Testament is a collection of writings by early Christians, believed to be mostly Jewish disciples of Christ, written in first- century Koine Greek. After three seasons telling the story of the burgeoning Rebel Alliance, the fourth and final season of Star Wars Rebels is finally going to show that central piece of.
These early Christian Greek writings consist of narratives, letters, and apocalyptic writings. Among Christian denominations there is some disagreement about the contents of the canon, primarily the Apocrypha, a list of works that are regarded with varying levels of respect. Attitudes towards the Bible also differ amongst Christian groups. Roman Catholics, Anglicans and Eastern Orthodox Christians stress the harmony and importance of the Bible and sacred tradition, while Protestant churches focus on the idea of sola scriptura, or scripture alone. This concept arose during the Protestant Reformation, and many denominations today support the use of the Bible as the only source of Christian teaching. ![]() With estimated total sales of over 5 billion copies, the Bible is widely considered to be the best- selling book of all time.[3][4] It has estimated annual sales of 1. West, where the Gutenberg Bible was the first book printed using movable type. Etymology. The English word Bible is from the Latin biblia, from the same word in Medieval Latin and Late Latin and ultimately from Koine Greekτὰ βιβλίαta biblia "the books" (singular βιβλίονbiblion).[7]Medieval Latinbiblia is short for biblia sacra "holy book", while biblia in Greek and Late Latin is neuter plural (gen. It gradually came to be regarded as a feminine singular noun (biblia, gen. Latin, and so the word was loaned as a singular into the vernaculars of Western Europe.[8] Latin biblia sacra "holy books" translates Greek τὰ βιβλία τὰ ἅγιαta biblia ta hagia, "the holy books".[9]The word βιβλίον itself had the literal meaning of "paper" or "scroll" and came to be used as the ordinary word for "book". It is the diminutive of βύβλοςbyblos, "Egyptian papyrus", possibly so called from the name of the Phoenician sea port Byblos (also known as Gebal) from whence Egyptian papyrus was exported to Greece. The Greek ta biblia (lit. Hellenistic Jews used to describe their sacred books (the Septuagint).[1. Christian use of the term can be traced to c. CE.[7] The biblical scholar F. F. Bruce notes that Chrysostom appears to be the first writer (in his Homilies on Matthew, delivered between 3. Greek phrase ta biblia ("the books") to describe both the Old and New Testaments together. Textual history. By the 2nd century BCE, Jewish groups began calling the books of the Bible the "scriptures" and they referred to them as "holy", or in Hebrew כִּתְבֵי הַקֹּדֶשׁ (Kitvei hakkodesh), and Christians now commonly call the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible "The Holy Bible" (in Greek τὰ βιβλία τὰ ἅγια, tà biblía tà ágia) or "the Holy Scriptures" (η Αγία Γραφή, e Agía Graphḗ).[1. The Bible was divided into chapters in the 1. Stephen Langton and it was divided into verses in the 1. French printer Robert Estienne[1. The division of the Hebrew Bible into verses is based on the sof passukcantillation mark used by the 1. Masoretes to record the verse divisions used in earlier oral traditions. The oldest extant copy of a complete Bible is an early 4th- century parchment book preserved in the Vatican Library, and it is known as the Codex Vaticanus. The oldest copy of the Tanakh in Hebrew and Aramaic dates from the 1. CE. The oldest copy of a complete Latin (Vulgate) Bible is the Codex Amiatinus, dating from the 8th century.[1. Development. Saint Paul Writing His Epistles, 1. Professor John K. Riches, Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism at the University of Glasgow, says that "the biblical texts themselves are the result of a creative dialogue between ancient traditions and different communities through the ages", and "the biblical texts were produced over a period in which the living conditions of the writers – political, cultural, economic, and ecological – varied enormously". Timothy H. Lim, a professor of Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism at the University of Edinburgh, says that the Old Testament is "a collection of authoritative texts of apparently divine origin that went through a human process of writing and editing."[1. He states that it is not a magical book, nor was it literally written by God and passed to mankind. Parallel to the solidification of the Hebrew canon (c. BCE), only the Torah first and then the Tanakh began to be translated into Greek and expanded, now referred to as the Septuagint or the Greek Old Testament. In Christian Bibles, the New Testament Gospels were derived from oral traditions in the second half of the first century CE. Riches says that: Scholars have attempted to reconstruct something of the history of the oral traditions behind the Gospels, but the results have not been too encouraging. The period of transmission is short: less than 4. Jesus and the writing of Mark's Gospel. This means that there was little time for oral traditions to assume fixed form.[2. The Bible was later translated into Latin and other languages. John Riches states that: The translation of the Bible into Latin marks the beginning of a parting of the ways between Western Latin- speaking Christianity and Eastern Christianity, which spoke Greek, Syriac, Coptic, Ethiopic, and other languages. The Bibles of the Eastern Churches vary considerably: the Ethiopic Orthodox canon includes 8. Qumran and subsequently excluded from the Jewish canon. As a general rule, one can say that the Orthodox Churches generally follow the Septuagint in including more books in their Old Testaments than are in the Jewish canon.[2. Hebrew Bible. The Masoretic Text is the authoritative Hebrew text of the Hebrew Bible, or Tanakh. It defines the books of the Jewish canon, and also the precise letter- text of these biblical books, with their vocalization and accentuation. The oldest extant manuscripts of the Masoretic Text date from approximately the 9th century CE,[2. Aleppo Codex (once the oldest complete copy of the Masoretic Text, but now missing its Torah section) dates from the 1. The name Tanakh (Hebrew: תנ"ך) reflects the threefold division of the Hebrew Scriptures, Torah ("Teaching"), Nevi'im ("Prophets") and Ketuvim ("Writings"). Torah. The Torah (תּוֹרָה) is also known as the "Five Books of Moses" or the Pentateuch, meaning "five scroll- cases".[2. The Hebrew names of the books are derived from the first words in the respective texts. The Torah consists of the following five books: The first eleven chapters of Genesis provide accounts of the creation (or ordering) of the world and the history of God's early relationship with humanity. The remaining thirty- nine chapters of Genesis provide an account of God's covenant with the Biblical patriarchs. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (also called Israel) and Jacob's children, the "Children of Israel", especially Joseph. It tells of how God commanded Abraham to leave his family and home in the city of Ur, eventually to settle in the land of Canaan, and how the Children of Israel later moved to Egypt. The remaining four books of the Torah tell the story of Moses, who lived hundreds of years after the patriarchs. He leads the Children of Israel from slavery in Ancient Egypt to the renewal of their covenant with God at Mount Sinai and their wanderings in the desert until a new generation was ready to enter the land of Canaan. The Torah ends with the death of Moses.[2. Bib. Me: Free Bibliography & Citation Maker. Select style& search. Select style & search. As used in this section, the term “strong public policy” means public policy of sufficient importance to outweigh the policy of protecting freedom of contract.(2) A court may not enforce: (a) A choice of law provision in a contract selecting the law of a foreign country which contravenes the strong public policy of this state or that is unjust or unreasonable.(b) A forum selection clause in a contract that selects a forum in a foreign country if the clause is shown to be unreasonable or unjust or if strong public policy would prohibit the enforceability of the clause under the specific facts of the case.(3) Before enforcing a judgment or order of a court of a foreign country, a court must review the judgment or order to ensure that it complies with the rule of comity. A judgment or order of a court of a foreign country is not entitled to comity if the parties were not given adequate notice and the opportunity to be heard, the foreign court did not have jurisdiction, or the judgment or order of the foreign court offends the public policy of this state. As used in this subsection, a “foreign court” or “court of a foreign country” includes any court or tribunal that has jurisdiction under the laws of that nation over the subject of matters governed by this chapter or chapter 8. Any attempt to apply the law of a foreign country is void if it contravenes the strong public policy of this state or if the law is unjust or unreasonable.(5) A trial court may not dismiss an action on the grounds that a satisfactory remedy may be more conveniently sought in a foreign country unless the trial court finds in accordance with all the applicable rules of civil procedure and this section that an adequate alternate forum exists.(6) This section applies only to matters governed by or relating to this chapter or chapter 8. The purpose of this section is to codify existing case law, and that intent should guide the interpretation of this section. History.—s. 1, ch. For purposes of anonymity, completed questionnaires must be kept in a separate file for later distribution by the clerk to researchers from the Florida State University Center for Marriage and Family. These questionnaires must be made available to researchers from the Florida State University Center for Marriage and Family at their request. The actual questionnaire shall be formulated by researchers from Florida State University who shall distribute them to the clerk of the circuit court in each county. History.—s. 5, ch. Expert 1: Tom Mc. Parland - Sometimes A Car Is Just A Tool And That Is Okay. Joe, sorry to hear about your bad luck, but I’m glad things are getting better. It’s deeply shitty that life dealt you such a raw deal recently, but I’m glad things are looking up again, and I don’t see any reason why you can’t find something interesting and fun even on a limited budget. Drew Magary’s Thursday Afternoon NFL Dick Joke Jamboroo runs every Thursday during the NFL season. Email Drew here. Buy his book here. I nearly drowned last week. I was at a beach off the coast of Delaware and the waves were a good 1. There were whitecaps going all the way back to the horizon. But I had already dragged our kids and all our shit down to the beach, so I was going into the water no matter what. My wife was like O HELL NO, but I was like, “It’s fine.” This is a standard dad move. I could push my kids out of a burning airplane and still turn to my wife and say, “This is perfectly safe!” I have no problem downplaying the potential lethality of ANY situation. So I go past the initial breakers and immediately I’m in deep shit. The waves won’t stop crashing. Every time I dive under them, they throw me back and I’m still in the middle of endless churn. And the undertow is so strong that it keeps dragging me right back into the middle of the action. I’m stuck. I can’t go forward or back. You’re supposed to swim sideways to break out of mean currents, but I’d already forgotten that bit of precious strategery. I keep diving under and getting thrown back. And now I look back to the beach and can see my wife and kid standing next to a stud lifeguard, who is holding his little red missile thingy, ready to dive in and come rescue my sorry ass. I remember when I would play in the ocean as a kid and the whole GOAL was to have the waves bury me and toss me around until I was spitting up seawater. I remember liking it for some reason. I remember wanting to see what would happen, what new ways the ocean would kick my ass. But I am no longer young. I’m not elastic. I’m not built for this. Now I’m getting pummeled before I have a chance to recover from the last pummeling. I only see the beach in flashes. My feet can’t touch the sand. I am going to be swept away and die like an idiot, which would be wholly appropriate given my career. But no. Not this day. No, I summon what small amount of Dad Strength I have left and push through the undertow and finally feel my feet touch the sand again. I stagger back to the beach as the waves nail me a few times more for good measure, and my wife is shaking her head like, “You moron.”Like any good dad, I take great pains to shrug off the entire incident. I go, “Wow, that was some brutal surf!” And the lifeguard is like, “Yeah, I was trying to call you in. We don’t want anyone going past knee deep today.” That’s my cue to activate my know- it- allism and be like, “Oh for sure! As you can see, the riptides are very strong today! I’M GLAD I COULD USE MY POSEIDON- LIKE MASTERY OF THE SEA TO TEST THESE WATERS AND SHOW THE REST OF THE BEACHGOERS THAT YOU MUST RESPECT THE WAVES.” Down the beach, there is a family with older kids, and those kids are hanging out WAY deep in the surf, on surfboards. The waves that crushed me bounce right off them. The lifeguard doesn’t seem to worry about them at all. They are good. They can handle it. I continue playing it off for the rest of the day. But afterward, at night, I close my eyes and I can still feel the waves tossing me around and beating me senseless. I can sense that I was close—perhaps not THAT close, but close enough to make me revisit the moment over and over—to getting carried out to sea and never seeing anyone or anything I love ever again. I fall asleep and I dream about being caught in roiling water, this time with no beach of any kind in sight. I can barely breathe. When I try to swim, the ocean grabs me and does as it pleases. And I wake up remembering what it was like for that split second when I knew I was in very real trouble. Normally, I am in command of my own body. I’m fully in charge of taking steps, and sitting down, and stuffing my face with breakfast sandwiches. Every movement is within my control. And so it’s very unnerving to experience a moment where you are forced to concede control of your body, when another entity takes over your central nervous system by proxy and you have to hope that it has mercy on you. I can recall, with great clarity, the moments when this has happened in my life. It happened out in that ocean. It happened any time I got into a car wreck. It happened any time I lost control while skiing, turned into a complete spazz, and then fell down. And of course, it happened out on the football field. The time between you placing your hand in the dirt and the snap is the longest. I remember practicing all week and daydreaming about finally getting into the game, where in I would CRUSH the opposition and thus be rewarded with fine foods and bountiful women. And then, when I finally got a chance to take the field in garbage time, I remember little but pure terror. OH FUCK. WHAT DO I DO? That time right before the snap is like waiting for a prison riot to break out. We drilled our movements down for hours. The o- line was always relegated to the hinterlands of the practice field, and there we would duck walk until our quads were ready to burst. We would face each other in a column of twos and get in proper pass block position and take turns jabbing and stepping and grabbing at the front of the d- lineman’s shoulder pads (this is why smart d- lineman wear tight jerseys and slick them with Vaseline). We would break down when the coach shouted BREAKDOWN! We did all that. The goal of any football practice is to prepare your men for everything that can happen during the course of the game, and it’s easy to delude yourself into thinking a good practice week can accomplish that. I remember I’d be like, “Wow, we had a great week of practice! This’ll go well!” And then the game would start. The few times I got in there, I’d hear the whistle blow and then find myself in the center of the churn. Everything I had practiced seemed useless in the center of that chaos. The mass of bodies did what it wanted, with me nearly helpless to influence it. One time, I was playing defense and broke through the o- line, only to realize that I had been set up for a pull block. And I can still remember that dude coming right at me, head lowered. I can still remember thinking, “Oh shit,” right before he plowed into me and I gave my body away. That would not be the only time football turned me into a rag doll. Of course, part of this was because I sucked. Other players could handle it. Other players could wade into the melee like giant cave trolls and retain full command of their facilities. They could go where they wanted to go. I don’t think I’ll ever stop wondering how some players do it. To this day, I don’t really know how the fuck Aaron Rodgers can do what he does. It seems well beyond the capacity of both body and mind to ignore 1. I don’t know how the mass doesn’t swallow him whole every play. Fewer people are watching the NFL now. Whether it’s because of cord- cutting, or disgust with head injuries, or political reasons, or endlessly drawn- out replays and suspension hearings, or just general dissatisfaction with the televised product, they are tuning out. This means nothing data- wise, but I really do have friends who have stopped watching the NFL out of disinterest, and they have no plans to return. I don’t really want my kids play the sport, and they haven’t asked to. People will probably keep tuning out in greater numbers, until viewership of pro football settles in at some still- insane number that would be perfectly viable to you or I, but will be catastrophic in the eyes of league owners and the network executives who line their pockets, executives depend on football viewership as a marketing vehicle for every other broadcast property they possess. When those losses mount, owners will deftly try to pass them on to literally anyone else—players, fans, vendors—and distaste for the NFL will only grow. And yet, I remain. Being an NFL fan, at this point, is an exhausting experience. I mean, it’s only September and I already feel like this league has aged me by a decade with all its horseshit. 9/17/2017 Download 'n' Read - The Single Vegan: Simple, Convenient And Appetizing Meals For OneRead NowThe Big Vegan Bowl — Oh She Glows. Crispy Pan-Fried Tofu. When I talk with folks about meatless meals, the conversation always comes around to tofu. I find people in two camps: (1) those who hate it. For the roasted chickpeas: Drain and rinse the chickpeas and then place on a large tea towel and pat until completely dry. Discard any skins that fall off. Transfer the chickpeas to the baking sheet and drizzle with 1/2 teaspoon oil. Rub them around with your hands until lightly coated. Generously sprinkle with fine grain sea salt and your favourite spices. I like to use garlic powder, chili powder, cumin, cayenne, and salt. Toss gently to combine. Place both the sweet potato and chickpeas into the preheated oven. Roast for 1. 5 minutes at 4. F and then remove both. Flip the sweet potatoes and gently roll around the chickpeas. What a great way to kick off 2. We’re already starting conversations about important topics. While I can’t promise to have answers to all your questions, I can share my experiences with you and encourage you to do the same. There are many things we can learn from each other so let’s talk, share, and get inspired! Today’s topic is about making the transition to a vegan diet. What I’ve written below is what has worked for me, so take this with a grain of salt – everyone’s experience will be different (and I’d love you to share yours below!). It’s also worth repeating that I’m not a nutrition/health professional and my opinions/experiences should not be substituted for medical advice. Always consult your doc before making any diet/lifestyle changes. How I made the transition to a vegan diet (in a somewhat condensed nutshell, but not really because I’m chatty): 1. Slow and Steady I’ve never been the type of person who rushes into anything. Eric and I dated for 8 years before we got hitched. I’m turning 3. 0 this year and I don’t feel close to being ready for motherhood. It took me a year to finally start this how- to series. You get the point. It doesn’t help that Eric is the exact. We can barely decide what laundry detergent to buy let alone make major life decisions. On the bright side, the decisions I do make are often long- lasting and my transition to a vegan diet was no different. I was in recovery for an eating disorder and looking to make some positive changes to my diet. After all, I had lived off of processed, fat- free, artificially- sweetened diet foods for years and I knew it was taking a toll on my health. I suffered from IBS and other digestive issues, so per my doc’s suggestions I experimented with reducing my consumption of meat and dairy to see if it would make a difference. When I started to shift away from all that dairy I was eating, I felt better, my skin started to clear up, and many of my digestive issues decreased. I was never a huge meat eater to begin with, so that part wasn’t as difficult for me, although it was still a challenge. Overtime, I really had no reason to go back to my old diet, even though giving up certain foods like cheese proved to be very difficult (more on this in a future post). When I’m asked what worked for me, I always say baby steps. Yes, it’s a cliché, but small changes really add up over time! This isn’t to say that going cold- turkey won’t work for you – many people go cold- turkey with diet/lifestyle changes and are successful with it. That just wasn’t my approach. I think it comes down to your personality and what you think will work best for you. Stock your pantry. A well- stocked pantry is one of the keys to success, especially in the beginning. We need options and fuel! And by options and fuel, I don’t mean the dry lettuce and tomato salads that restaurants often try to entice me with. How about fresh produce, legumes, herbs/spices, quinoa, rolled oats, edamame, and almond milk to name a few. I wrote a post a while ago called “My Vegan Pantry“, listing the most common foods I have stocked in my cupboards from dried beans to vinegar and everything in between. I do need to update the post, but I still hope it’s helpful for you. Keep in mind that some of the items are my baking ingredients and not what I would consider “necessities” by any means. When I first made the transition I stocked my fridge with mock meat and dairy products like Tofurkey slices, vegan sour cream, and TVP crumbles. Yes, if you go back in time on my blog, you might come across the odd Tofurkey sandwich! The truth is, I had no idea how to eat a fulfilling, vibrant, and healthy diet on my own without these substitution foods. I wasn’t wrong for eating them, I just didn’t have all of the knowledge I needed at the time. I didn’t feel great eating these products, or at least, I didn’t feel as great as I did without them. Eventually, I discovered how to thrive on a vegan diet without relying on them, but I do recognize they were helpful for me in the early stages. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that a big bowl of lentils and tomato sauce was much more satisfying than mock deli meat from a box. Once I made this connection, it got easier and easier. Be your own teacher. If you think that I grew up learning to cook and bake, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Four years ago, I had no idea how to cook dry lentils or so much as roast a batch of root vegetables. I could barely dice an onion for the life of me! This meant I had to teach myself how to prepare almost all of the foods I now enjoy. I did a lot of reading, Googling, watching cooking shows, devouring cookbooks, and searching You Tube for how- to videos. Little did I know, this girl who used to survive on diet foods would soon find a passion in food and cooking like never before. So can you. Along the same lines, it’s good to research the nutritional aspects of a vegan diet. There are many books out there now with this information to help guide you. I also recommend checking out Forks Over Knives for an inspirational documentary on the benefits of a plant- based diet. Focus on what you add, not take away. As I mentioned in my first post, I eventually learned that a vegan diet is really about what I add and not what I take away. The more I focused on all the new foods I was trying, I really didn’t feel like I was missing out at all. My diet used to be so limited and boring, lacking in colourful produce, and inspiration. I was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of foods I can eat on a plant- based diet. If you are feeling stuck in a rut, challenge yourself to try one new food a week and pick a recipe to make with it. There are so many recipes and tutorials available online that make cooking new foods a breeze. Or better yet, start a food blog to document your new journey! Having accountability online is a great motivator and you get to meet other like- minded friends. Don’t expect perfection. I have slipped up on my vegan diet just like many of you have. Guess what? We are human! My advice is to focus on all the amazing choices you’ve made to date instead of that time when you slipped up. No matter what kind of diet you eat, every time you chose plants over animals you are making a difference. For me, this journey has been easier and easier as the years go by. The cravings I once had are much, much less. Instead of craving the old foods, I now crave the new foods that I eat. It’s amazing how the taste buds can adapt when you give them a chance. Get support. Find friends who want to take this journey with you. I didn’t know any vegans until I met many friends online through reading other blogs and going to meet ups. It’s important to have a support system. Join clubs, recipe groups, meet ups, and attend conferences. I’m going to my first vegan conference (Vida Vegan Con) in May and I’m so excited to meet new friends in this community. Pack food. When I leave the house for long periods of time, I always pack snacks or meals with me. Whether it’s an afternoon out or a few days at the in laws, I plan ahead and bring food. You can always find a couple energy bars in the bottom of my purse on any given day! Most days I don’t need them, but I feel great knowing I have a healthy snack on me in case the hunger monster strikes. Well, I could go on and on, but since this is already quite wordy I will pass it over to you! What’s your approach when making a change – slow and steady or cold- turkey? How did you make the transition to a vegan or vegetarian diet? What strategies worked for you? Long- term effects of alcohol consumption. The long- term effects of alcohol (also known formerly as ethanol) consumption range from cardioprotective health benefits for low to moderate alcohol consumption in industrialized societies with higher rates of cardiovascular disease[1][2] to severe detrimental effects in cases of chronic alcohol abuse.[3]Health effects associated with alcohol intake in large amounts include an increased risk of alcoholism, malnutrition, chronic pancreatitis, alcoholic liver disease, and cancer. In addition, damage to the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system can occur from chronic alcohol abuse.[4][5] The long- term use of alcohol is capable of damaging nearly every organ and system in the body.[6] The developing adolescent brain is particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of alcohol.[7] In addition, the developing fetal brain is also vulnerable, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) may result if pregnant mothers consume alcohol. The inverse relation in Western cultures between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular disease has been known for over 1. Many physicians do not promote alcohol consumption, however, given the many health concerns associated with it, some suggest that alcohol should be regarded as a recreational drug, and promote exercise and good nutrition to combat cardiovascular disease.[9][1. Others have argued that the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption may be outweighed by other increased risks, including those of injuries, violence, fetal damage, liver disease, and certain forms of cancer.[1. Withdrawal effects and dependence are also almost identical.[1. Alcohol at moderate levels has some positive and negative effects on health. The negative effects include increased risk of liver diseases, oropharyngealcancer, esophageal cancer and pancreatitis. Conversely moderate intake of alcohol may have some beneficial effects on gastritis and cholelithiasis.[1. Of the total number of deaths and diseases caused by alcohol, most happen to the majority of the population who are moderate drinkers, rather than the heavy drinker minority.[1. Chronic alcohol misuse and abuse has serious effects on physical and mental health. Chronic excess alcohol intake, or alcohol dependence, can lead to a wide range of neuropsychiatric or neurological impairment, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and malignant neoplasms. The psychiatric disorders which are associated with alcoholism include major depression, dysthymia, mania, hypomania, panic disorder, phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, personality disorders, schizophrenia, suicide, neurologic deficits (e. Alcohol dependence is associated with hypertension, coronary heart disease, and ischemic stroke, cancer of the respiratory system, and also cancers of the digestive system, liver, breast and ovaries. Heavy drinking is associated with liver disease, such as cirrhosis.[1. Excessive alcohol consumption can have a negative impact on aging.[1. Recent studies have focused on understanding the mechanisms by which moderate alcohol consumption confers cardiovascular benefit.[1. Maximum quantity recommended[edit]. Total recorded alcohol per capita consumption (1. Different countries recommend different maximum quantities. For most countries, the maximum quantity for men is 1. For women, the range is 8. Most countries recommend total abstinence during pregnancy and lactation. Alcohol- related death[edit]Disability- adjusted life year for alcohol use disorders per 1. Over- consumption of alcohol causes many deaths worldwide. The overall mortality from alcohol use was found to be similar to that of the effect of physical inactivity.[1. A review in 2. 00. Extensive research of Western cultures has consistently shown increased survival associated with light to moderate alcohol consumption.[2. A 2. 3- year prospective study of 1. Britishphysicians aged 4. This benefit was strongest for ischemic heart disease, but was also noted for other vascular disease and respiratory disease. Death rate amongst current drinkers was higher for 'alcohol augmentable' disease such as liver disease and oral cancers, but these deaths were much less common than cardiovascular and respiratory deaths. The lowest mortality rate was found for consumption of 8 to 1. In the UK a unit is defined as 1. Higher consumption increased overall mortality rate, but not above that of non- drinkers.[2. Other studies have found age- dependent mortality risks of low- to- moderate alcohol use: an increased risk for individuals aged 1. This is consistent with other research that found a J- curve dependency between alcohol consumption and total mortality among middle aged and older men. While the mortality rates of ex- drinkers and heavy drinkers are significantly elevated, the all- cause mortality rates may be 1. Although the definition of a drink varies between studies and countries, this meta- analysis found that low levels of alcohol intake, defined as 1- 2 drinks per day for women and 2- 4 drinks per day for men, was associated with lower mortality than abstainers.[2. This claim was challenged by another study[2. However, the J- curve for total and CHD mortality was reconfirmed by studies that took the mentioned confounders into account.[2. There seems to be little discussion of what proportion of individuals classified as abstainers are those already at greater risk of mortality due to chronic conditions and do not or cannot consume alcohol for reasons of health or harmful interactions with medication. The observed decrease in mortality of light- to- moderate drinkers compared to never drinkers might be partially explained by superior health and social status of the drinking group; [3. Additionally, confounders such as underreporting of alcohol intake might lead to the underestimation of how much mortality is reduced in light- to- moderate drinkers.[2. A 2. 01. 0 study confirmed the beneficial effect of moderate alcohol consumption on mortality.[3. Subjects were grouped into abstainers, light, moderate, and heavy drinkers. The order of mortality rates from lowest to highest were moderate, light, heavy, and abstainers. The increased risk for abstainers was twice the mortality rate as for moderate drinkers. This study specifically sought to control for confounding factors including the problem of ex- drinkers considered as non- drinkers.[3. According to another study, drinkers with heavy drinking occasions (six or more drinks at a time) have a 5. Mortality is lowest among young abstainers and highest among young heavy drinkers.[3. In contrast to studies of Western cultures, research in other cultures has yielded some opposite findings. The landmark INTERHEART Study has revealed that alcohol consumption in South Asians was not protective against CAD in sharp contrast to other populations who benefit from it.[3. In fact Asian Indians who consume alcohol had a 6. The harm was observed in alcohol users classified as occasional as well as regular light, moderate, and heavy consumers.[3. Another large study of 4. India also confirmed the possible harm of alcohol consumption on coronary risk in men. Compared to lifetime abstainers, alcohol users had higher blood sugar (2 mg/dl), blood pressure (2 mm Hg) levels, and the HDL- C levels (2 mg/dl) and significantly higher tobacco use (6. Many countries collect statistics on alcohol- related deaths. While some categories relate to short- term effects, such as accidents, many relate to long- term effects of alcohol. One study claims that "excessive alcohol consumption in Russia, particularly by men, has in recent years caused more than half of all the deaths at ages 1. However, there are some difficulties with this study. For instance the same study also found a protective effect of heavy drinking on breast cancer mortality. This contradicts the well established scientific view that alcohol increases breast cancer risk.[4. 9/17/2017 Advances In Multiple Criteria Decision Making And Human Systems Management: Knowledge And Wisdom (Stand Alone) - Free DownloadRead Now![]() Stepping Up Our Game: Re-focusing the Security Community on Defense and Making Security Work for Everyone. Biomedical engineering technologies such as brain–machine interfaces and neuroprosthetics are advancements which assist human beings in varied ways. There are exciting yet speculative visions of how the neurosciences and bioengineering may influence human nature. However, these could be preparing a possible pathway towards an enhanced and even posthuman future. This article seeks to investigate several ethical themes and wider questions of enhancement, transhumanism and posthumanism. Four themes of interest are: autonomy, identity, futures, and community. Three larger questions can be asked: will everyone be enhanced? Will we be “human” if we are not, one day, transhuman? Should we be enhanced or not? The article proceeds by concentrating on a widespread and sometimes controversial application: the cochlear implant, an auditory prosthesis implanted into Deaf patients. Cochlear implantation and its reception in both the deaf and hearing communities have a distinctive moral discourse, which can offer surprising insights. The paper begins with several points about the enhancement of human beings, transhumanism’s reach beyond the human, and posthuman aspirations. Next it focuses on cochlear implants on two sides. Firstly, a shorter consideration of what technologies may do to humans in a transhumanist world. Secondly, a deeper analysis of cochlear implantation’s unique socio- political movement, its ethical explanations and cultural experiences linked with pediatric cochlear implantation—and how those wary of being thrust towards posthumanism could marshal such ideas by analogy. As transhumanism approaches, the issues and questions merit continuing intense analysis. Keywords. Enhancements Cochlear implantation Transhumanism Posthumanism Being human Deaf culture. Get a Crash Course in Writing from 2. Journalists. I only remember one practical writing lesson from my three years as an English major: Whenever you can, put the best bits at the end of the sentence. Put the next- best bits at the beginning, and put the rest in the middle. This trick works in every kind of writing, and I wish I’d spent my college years learning more tricks like it, instead of pretending to read The Brothers Karamazov. Writing is one of the easiest skills to learn without paying college tuition. You could get a pretty solid start just from this collection of writing advice from twenty prominent journalists. Working With Words: A Handbook For Media Writers And Editors NetworkWorking With Words: A Handbook For Media Writers And Editors San DiegoMetafilter user not_the_water gathered the advice from articles, online courses, podcasts, live talks, and a drinking game. Some highlights: The Orchid Thief author Susan Orlean on finding story ideas: “The percentage of ideas you pursue, [vs.] the ones you actually believe will work as a story, doesn’t have to be high. In fact, it’s great to practice following an idea and saying, ‘Not gonna work.’”Pulitzer winner Anne Hull on writing about a culture as an outsider: “Be conscious of the distancing language that inhabits most newspaper stories. If you have anything to say, about the world, about life, look for a way to say it without making a speech.”Slouching Towards Bethlehem author Joan Didion on editing as you go along: “When I finish work at the end of the day, I go over the page that I’ve done that day, and I mark it up. And then I make the corrections in the morning, which gives me a way to start the day.”Criminal justice reporter Beth Schwartzapfel on anecdotes in dry factual stories: “I think of them as raisins in oatmeal, or the signs people hold on the sidelines of a marathon. They’re little surprises or jolts of pleasure to remind people of what they’re reading and why it matters.”Certain themes run throughout: Narratives need character and tension. The structure and traditions of universities often make interdisciplinary study of areas or problems difficult to realize. In each traditional discipline, scholars have their own priorities, assumptions and methods. Many journals publish "normal science" and hesitate to print articles that cross, enlarge, or challenge disciplinary boundaries and forge new areas of inquiry. Even scholars working within the same discipline face similar problems. They often experience difficulty finding and maintaining contact with those who have similar interests at other institutions. The Law and Society Association exists to overcome these barriers and to enable the growth and integration of the social study of law. As part of this effort the Association has encouraged the creation of CRNs to organize theme sessions for the annual meetings and develop cross- disciplinary/cross- national research projects. A CRN Coordinating Committee is appointed by the LSA President to coordinate existing CRNs and accept proposals for new ones. Our current CRN Committee Chair is Nancy Marder, Illinois Institute of Technology- Chicago, Kent College of Law. Societies in Asia and the Americas may seem to have nothing in common given their particularities; however, many countries in these two regions share similar historical and political experiences (e. Nevertheless these geographically diverse societies, although very different in their current legal and political cultures, may also share constitutional and democratic values. In this age of globalization, when economic ties between these regions are gaining strength and momentum, it becomes a necessity to study them comparatively. This is especially important when developing economic relationships bring issues such as the rule of law and protection of human rights to the fore. This CRN examines legal development, constitutional law and legal cultures from the perspectives of both legal sociology and comparative law. In particular, it seeks to understand how political and historical paths, as well as global influences such as universalization of human rights and democratic constitutional values, have shaped the formation and evolution of constitutional law and legal culture in various countries. It further seeks to examine the manifestations of contemporary legal culture in the political aspects of constitutional law, and in implementing democratic processes and human rights. This CRN brings together scholars engaged in these thematic and regional foci. Citizenship and Immigration. Visit the Citizenship and Immigration Website. Issues of citizenship and immigration are critical to understanding ways that individuals and groups are created and marginalized. Within this collaborative research network, “citizenship,” is defined broadly, to include legal status, membership rights, civic involvement, social participation, and linkages to structures that delimit, transcend, and/or deconstruct the nation- state. It is also important to understand the discourses and practices that implicitly or explicitly define citizenship in particular contexts. Thus, race, gender, national origin, religion, ethnicity, social class and other markers of membership or exclusion may subtly or violently shape the claiming or attribution of citizenship in practice. Moreover, globalizing and transnational processes may reshape both citizenship and exclusion, positioning individuals and groups within and outside of multiple legal orders. Immigration is clearly one such process, and, given the war on terrorism and the restructuring of immigration in the United States and the sharpening of inequality internationally, it is crucial to examine how movements, non- movements, rights, and statuses are being distributed by nation- states and, sometimes, other entities. Through the annual meetings of the Law and Society Association, the Citizenship and Immigration Collaborative Research Network provides a forum in which scholars and practitioners who are interested in these issues can organize discussions, share work, and exchange ideas. In the past, we have met to compare research interests in diverse national settings, and we have organized panels and roundtables on citizenship and immigration. Relevant topics for papers and panels might include comparative analyses of immigration policies, the ways that subordinate groups are positioned vis- à- vis the nation- state and transnational entities, the redefinition of citizenship in global and transnational contexts, developments in asylum and human rights, the nature of inclusion and exclusion in particular settings, the forms that citizenship and immigration assume, analyses of significant legal cases or international agreements, ways that the U. S. war on terrorism is affecting immigrants’ rights, and so forth. 9/16/2017 Hypnosis To Improve Your Memory (Self-Hypnosis And Subliminal Learning) - Free DownloadRead NowMind Control Stories: Smc ff.
